AI agents blocked online: what changes for your SME
In brief
According to The Verge, users of AI agents from Meta, OpenAI, xAI and Instinct report being blocked on popular websites. Yelp told TechCrunch it only allows agents that pay for its data licensing program, Delta Air Lines blocks ticket bookings, and JPMorgan Chase and Charles Schwab block account access on security grounds. What it changes for an SME
If you planned to use a consumer AI agent to book, shop or log into third-party sites, those tasks can now fail without notice. Operational risk rises because a process that worked yesterday can be cut off by the destination site, including through anti-bot systems. Letting an agent access bank accounts or customer data also raises security and liability questions that banks already refuse. If you run an online store, you need a clear stance on whether to allow, license or block such agents.
What you can do
- List every process where an AI agent acts on a third-party website on your behalf, and keep a manual fallback.
- Check the terms of your critical services (banking, travel, e-commerce) to see whether agents are prohibited.
- If you operate a website, set a policy for agent access and review how your anti-bot tools treat them.
