AI speeds up project reporting, not risk foresight
In brief
According to Virage group's 2026 PMO Observatory, 73% of project management officers use AI regularly, but under 10% apply it to risk forecasting or scenario tests. For 85% of respondents, the main benefit is time saved on reporting. Only 5% use AI built into their portfolio management tool.

What it changes for an SME
If you manage projects in a company of 10 to 250 people, this survey covers PMO roles rather than your size of firm. The pattern it shows is still relevant: AI is used mainly to save time on reports, not to forecast risks. According to the Observatory, 63% of respondents cite confidentiality and 52% data sovereignty as barriers, well ahead of cost (20%), and 63% say decisions under uncertainty should stay human. Weak or poorly organised project data still limits these tools to writing support.
What you can do
- Check whether the AI you use on projects only drafts reports or also helps you track risks.
- Find out where your project data is hosted and who can access it, since confidentiality is the main barrier cited.
- Write down usage rules: 55% of organisations in the study already allow AI under a defined framework.
