Autonomous AI agents raise the risk to company websites

In brief

According to the security firm Norforge, a hacker used AI agents that mostly acted on their own to gain access to more than 100 websites. Reuters reports that the victims included John Deere, SharkNinja and Cummins. Norforge found the activity through exposed instances of Cairn, an open-source AI platform, and Reuters says a successful intrusion took about 23 hours.

What it changes for an SME

According to company statements reported by The Verge and Reuters, one incident involved a third-party vendor website, another a standalone product-support site where the threat was contained, and John Deere reported no sign that sensitive information was accessed. The facts given do not mention European SMEs. They do show that an attacker can have AI agents work across many websites with little human time, including a support or supplier-hosted page. If customer data sit on that page, the operational cost and your notification duties remain yours.

What you can do

  • List every website you run or that a vendor runs for you, including support pages and subdomains.
  • Ask those vendors how they would detect an intrusion and who would notify you.
  • Check that you know whom to notify, and how quickly, if a site holding personal data is compromised.
