Canva's own image AI: a new option for SME marketing design

Canva has released Canva Craft, its first image generation model, according to the company. It said the model first plans layout, scale and text from a prompt, then creates images up to 2K in many aspect ratios, aiming for object detail and readable text. The model is open to all Canva users and via the Canva API; Leonardo.ai researchers, after a 2024 acquisition, contributed.

What it changes for an SME
If you already use Canva for social posts, slides or print, you can now generate images in the same tool with a model the company said was trained on its design templates rather than photographs. According to Canva, that should support readable text, accurate objects and edits that do not alter the rest of the image, and generated pictures can be turned into layered designs on the platform. Canva said the model also gives it more control over quality and speed, and that two cost-efficient versions, Craftfast and Craft-ultrafast, are due soon. The announcement does not describe any change to GDPR or EU AI Act duties for user companies.
