ChatGPT can now work from your open Chrome tabs
In brief
According to OpenAI, the ChatGPT Google Chrome extension can now view the tabs you already have open when you tag Chrome in the ChatGPT web or desktop app. The company also updated the in-page sidebar so ChatGPT and its conversation history remain available without leaving the current page. ChatGPT Work can act on tabs to send messages, fill in forms, download files, and organize or group tabs.

What it changes for an SME
For an SME, staff who already use ChatGPT in Chrome may spend less time comparing suppliers, copying figures into a sheet, or filling forms from another tab. The announcement does not mention any new fee. The change that matters is risk: ChatGPT can see the content of open tabs, including client, HR or finance pages left in the background. You should treat that as processing of company and personal data under the GDPR and set rules before people enable it.
What you can do
- Check whether the ChatGPT Chrome extension is installed on work PCs and who may let it read tabs.
- Review which pages staff keep open (clients, payroll, banking) and which must stay out of ChatGPT.
- Update your GDPR processing record and internal AI rules if tab content will be shared with ChatGPT.
