Cheaper OpenAI mid-range model for drawings, forms and drafting

In brief

According to OpenAI, GPT-6.1 Terra is a fast model that combines visual reasoning, computer use and clearer writing. It is presented as an improvement over GPT-5.6 Terra for tasks such as drafting proposals, reading technical drawings, filling forms and editing videos. Simon Willison notes a price of 1 dollar per million input tokens and 5 dollars per million output tokens, about half of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

What it changes for an SME

If you already use OpenAI models through an API, GPT-6.1 Terra can cut token cost to about half of GPT-5.6 Terra for visual work and computer use. According to OpenAI's Ted Sanders, it is better than Astra and Sol at technical communication, similar but faster on vision and computer use, and a bit weaker on most other tasks. For a ChatGPT subscription, the change is modest: a little more room if you hit usage limits, or faster computer use. This release does not change your duties under GDPR or the EU AI Act.

What you can do

  • Check whether you already pay for GPT-5.6 Terra or GPT-6.1 Sol on the API and compare token cost on your usual volumes.
  • If you automate form filling or reading of technical drawings, trial Terra on a small internal sample before you switch models.
  • Ask your provider which model name runs in production, so cost or quality does not change without your knowledge.
