Claude Haiku 5.5 on AWS: faster and cheaper AI model

In brief

Amazon has announced the availability of Claude Haiku 5.5 on Amazon Bedrock and via Claude Platform on AWS. According to Anthropic, it is the fastest and most efficient model in the Claude 5.5 family and costs around 75 percent less than Claude Haiku 4.5 for most tasks. It is built for subagents and high-volume, cost-sensitive work.

What it changes for an SME

For an SME, the main appeal is cost and speed: high-volume repetitive tasks (document classification, summarisation, answering questions over a knowledge base, browser automation) become cheaper to run, according to Anthropic. Going through Amazon Bedrock keeps data within AWS infrastructure, with IAM access controls, CloudTrail and CloudWatch for audit and monitoring, and Bedrock Guardrails, which simplifies governance if your team already uses AWS. The concrete impact depends on your existing use cases; for SMEs without an AI project underway, the effect remains limited for now.

What you can do

  • If you already use AWS, test the model in the Amazon Bedrock console (Playground) on a concrete task such as classifying or summarising your internal documents.
  • Have your IT team check the required IAM permissions (InvokeModel) and the impact on your AWS bill before any deployment.
  • Consider pairing Opus 5.5 (reasoning) with Haiku 5.5 (fast tasks) if you run high-volume agentic workflows.
