Google AI may now use Gmail and Drive data for ads
In brief
According to The Verge, Google updated its privacy policy on 16 October. The company now says that Gmail, Drive and Photos data may be used for personalised ads if you connect those services to AI tools such as Search or Gemini. Google states that advertisers do not receive this content or identifying details, and that sensitive categories are excluded.

What it changes for an SME
If your SME uses Google Workspace and staff enable Personal Intelligence or similar AI tools, work emails, files and photos may now help Google personalise ads. According to Google, advertisers do not receive that content or names and email addresses. The practical change is a higher privacy and GDPR risk if business data shapes advertising profiles without a clear decision. Costs and delivery timelines for your own AI projects are not affected.
What you can do
- Check whether Search or Gemini personalisation is enabled on company Google accounts.
- Disconnect Gmail, Drive and Photos from those AI features if you do not want that data used for ads.
- Record the decision in your GDPR documentation and set a rule for work accounts.
