Meta drops an AI-training clause from its business terms

In brief

According to Siècle Digital, on 17 October Meta removed a passage from its commercial terms after criticism from publishers and lawyers. The first draft let Meta use material from a client's related web pages and domains to build, improve and train its own services, including pages outside Meta. The terms take effect on 30 October without a separate signature.

What it changes for an SME

If you buy ads or use Meta's commercial tools, the revised terms apply on 30 October without a separate signature. The passage that would have let Meta use content from sites tied to your offers, including pages outside its platforms, to train its AI is no longer in those terms. Digital-law specialists had concluded that signing could override technical notices on a website. According to spokesperson Daniel Roberts, this does not change how Meta's robots crawl the web and confers no extra right to ignore a publisher's preferences.

What you can do

  • Read Meta's updated commercial terms before 30 October if you buy ads or use its business tools.
  • Check your site's crawler instructions, because according to Meta its web robots' behavior does not change.
  • Review what still applies to your ads, catalogs and programming interfaces.
