Meta Muse: shared business files had easy-to-find public links

In brief

Meta has restored Muse sharing after a pause. Researchers at Claroc said shared Muse addresses used the conversation title and appeared in public DNS; they found a marketing company's internal revenue review and a small business owner's loan application. According to Meta's David Singleton, artifact URLs are fixed, previously shared items have new addresses, and old links now ask visitors to request the new one.

What it changes for an SME

If your company does not use Meta Muse, nothing in your day-to-day work changes. If you shared Muse artifacts such as documents or images before the fix, those items now have new URLs and the old links no longer open the file; people who used the old address must get the new one from you. Researchers reported finding real business material, including a marketing company's internal revenue review and a small business owner's loan application, which means a sensitive file shared this way could have been easier to discover than you intended. That is a confidentiality issue and, if the file holds personal data, a data-protection issue; a new URL does not tell you who already opened an old link.

What you can do

  • Check whether anyone in your company used Muse to share documents or images, especially financial or personal files.
  • If you shared an artifact before the fix, send colleagues or clients the new URL; the old link will not open the file.
  • Treat consumer AI share links as potentially public until you know they cannot be guessed or listed, and do not put loan, payroll or revenue files there.
