WebMCP lets AI agents act on your website
In brief
According to Journal du Net, Microsoft and Google launched WebMCP in August 2025 so a website can expose actions to AI agents, such as search, add-to-cart or form submit. ChatGPT and Codex support it natively. Chrome 149 and Edge 150 include it experimentally. As of October 2026, Claude and Gemini had no native support without a dedicated MCP connector.

What it changes for an SME
If you sell online, especially on Shopify, the purchase path can already be exposed to agents since 5 August 2026, with no extra setup. Cloudflare offers activation without changing your code, and Wix has an official app; a custom site still needs development work. Google sees little value for a simple brochure site, blog or portfolio. The practical risk is letting agents perform real actions (cart, forms) while only a few agents support the protocol and browser support remains experimental.
What you can do
- Check whether your Shopify store already exposes WebMCP, which has been on by default since 5 August 2026.
- If you use Cloudflare or Wix, review the no-code switch or official app before changing the site.
- Expose only useful actions (search, cart, long forms), as Google recommends, rather than every page.
