AI agents on bank accounts: what it means for SMEs
In brief
According to Axios, large US banks have detected AI agents accessing customer accounts, often because users hand over their login details. They often cannot tell whether a login comes from a person or from an agent. Morgan Stanley says it has found no uncontrolled agent on its platforms but now blocks such agents, while JPMorgan, Bank of America and Citi are also seeking to restrict this access.
What it changes for an SME
For your SME, no European measure is described here: the cases cited involve US banks, and it is not known whether AI agents also reach French accounts. The practical issue is operational risk: if you give the company's bank credentials to an assistant that handles statements or payments, an agent can log in and act, while the bank may not tell that action from a human one. You lose control, and a block on the bank side can also interrupt a process you had already automated.
What you can do
- Check that no AI assistant has been given the logins for your business bank accounts.
- If a tool needs bank data, limit it to reading balances and history, with no right to transfer or pay.
- Ask your bank how it treats automated logins and whether it blocks AI agents.
