Copilot in OneDrive: what it changes for your files

In brief

Microsoft presented new Copilot features for OneDrive and SharePoint, some already available and others due in the coming months. According to Microsoft, Copilot can analyse several spreadsheets, extract trends, generate charts, reorganise a folder and turn documents into HTML reports. The company also adds unique sharing links with an expiry date, a Library view, and a storage cut for Microsoft 365 Family and Premium.

What it changes for an SME

If your teams already work in OneDrive or SharePoint, Copilot can cut time spent analysing spreadsheets, tidying folders or drafting reports. Unique sharing links with an expiry date, for example 90 days according to Microsoft, can reduce leftover access. Microsoft also wants AI agents to work with your files, for instance through a share or a mention in a comment, which means you need to control who can expose which documents. The Family and Premium storage cut (from 1 TB per person to 2 TB shared) applies to new subscriptions since 8 October 2026 and generally at renewal from 2 May 2027 for existing subscribers; the announcement does not describe typical business contracts.

What you can do

  • Check whether Copilot already appears in OneDrive and SharePoint for your users, and in which cases.
  • List your open sharing links and plan to set an expiry date once the single-link feature is available.
  • If you sync large libraries, check PC RAM (Microsoft states 8 GB for up to one million items) and, on Family or Premium plans, the quota at renewal.
